The US Green Building Council (USGBC), a coalition of manufacturers, builders, government leaders, and environmental advocates focused on green building and sustainability, has recently announced that it will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on June 7, 2017.
This event marks the first time in the NYSE’s 223-year history that an environmental-focused organization has been invited to open the stock exchange market.
The event is part of the USGBC’s larger initiative of educating people about the importance of sustainability in the built environment. The USGBC’s “Green Apple Day of Service” provides individuals and organizations the opportunity to improve the health and quality of local schools, with projects centered on energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, waste reduction, and other green building strategies.
“The USGBC is excited to recognize the importance of investing in green building and sustainability on the international stage when we ring the opening bell at the NYSE,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of the USGBC. “The Exchange is the definitive barometer for advances in industry and technology, and USGBC is honored to lead the effort to showcase green building and sustainability as an industry that’s growing rapidly and producing real, measurable results.”
The event is expected to draw attention to the USGBC’s call to action for the global green building community to continue applying their knowledge, resources, and global network of green building professionals to transform our built environment into a more sustainable and resilient future.
The USGBC’s mission statement declares its commitment to “building a fully inclusive, healthy, and prosperous future through the organized participation of a diverse range of stakeholders around the world.” We believe the NYSE bell-ringing event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of this organization.
