Recent reports from The Turkish Statistical Institute show that the unemployment rate in Turkey remained unchanged in March compared to the previous month.
The unemployment rate in Turkey stood at 10.0% in March, largely unchanged from the figure of 10.1% recorded in February.
The data showed that the number of unemployed in the country was 3.3 million people in March, up modestly from the figure of 3.2 million in the previous month. This increase in unemployment was offset slightly by a small rise in the size of the workforce, which increased from 28.73 million to 28.78 million from February to March.
The youth unemployment rate, defined as the percentage of young people aged 15 to 24 years old, who are out of work, increased to 18.8% in March, up from 18.7% in February.
Compared to the same month a year earlier, the jobless rate in March was 0.5 percentage points higher, while the youth unemployment rate stood at 2.8 percentage points higher than the same period 12 months prior.
Public sector employment in Turkey grew by 1.3% over the same period, while the number of people employed in the private sector fell by 0.2%.
The government is aiming to reach a 5% unemployment rate by 2023, but the latest data shows that the unemployment rate has been in double-digit territory for eighteen consecutive months. This highlights the need for increased economic growth and employment policies that will help to bring down Turkey’s stubbornly high unemployment rate.
