Redfall
Arkane
Redfall has had a disappointing launch, with review scores in the low 60s. But user scores? Those are on another level, and while I’ve covered review bombing campaigns meant to sink the scores of games before, I do not believe that’s what this is. But should the scores be this low?
We have now reached “all-timer” status, at least on Steam, where Redfall’s 28% positive reviews with a 2.83 average score mean that it’s #14 in the list of the worst-reviewed Steam games of all time.
I’m guessing you have not even heard of most of the bottom 15 at all:
- War of the Three Kingdoms (1.44)
- Flatout 3: Chaos and Destruction (1.67)
- Identity (1.78)
- Uriel’s Chasm (1.79)
- Spacebase DF-9 (1.83)
- O2Jam Online (1.87)
- RollerCoaster Tycoon World (2.47)
- Godus (2.52)
- Kinetic Void (2.58)
- Mirror 2: Project X (2.58)
- Sacred 3 (2.64)
- Towns (2.65)
- GASP (2.72)
- Redfall (2.83)
- Umbrella Corps (2.96)
I’ll be honest, I have literally heard of two of these games besides Redfall, RollerCoaster Tycoon World and the infamous Godus. Even if I have called Redfall one of the worst AAA games I can remember playing, to be this far down with no-name shovelware may be a bit extreme. And it may rise over time if aspects of the game are fixed.
Some of the major games within the top 50 are Dynasty Warriors 9, Warzone 2.0, Battlefield 2042 and Arkham Origins. But if you’re wondering about other famous disaster launches, those are better than you think, in part because they kept improving over time. Fallout 76 has 75% positive user reviews, No Man’s Sky has 75%, Cyberpunk 2077 has 79% and Godfall even has 63%. So yes, Redfall is an anomaly, and while it could crawl back up, that’s…a long way to climb.
What’s fascinating about this is that there’s not one specific issue to point to. There’s no political review bombing thing going on because of “ woke” whatever. The game does not run well on PC, certainly, but it’s not outright broken. Jedi Survivor runs a lot worse on PC right now, I’d argue. It’s just…everything, all the big and small things the game does wrong to add up to a woeful final product. I’ve said I cannot find anything redeeming about Redfall, and I guess I’m not alone.
