The United Kingdom’s Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said that there is no ‘magic wand’ to ease the financial pressures from the pharmaceutical industry, following an official meeting with leading pharmaceutical companies.
The meeting was conducted in an effort to tackle the rising costs associated with pharmaceutical drugs and the increasing concerns of industry groups struggling to deal with financial constraints. Hunt discussed a range of initiatives and the current progress which has been made in the healthcare industry to address the issue, but also noted that there is no single solution to providing sufficient measures to address the problem.
“This is a hugely important issue for the industry, and nobody should be under any illusion there is an easy or magic wand answer. The UK needs to make sure the NHS does not pay over the odds for drugs, while also providing the world with the latest treatments and cures,” said Hunt.
The UK’s Department of Health and the pharmaceutical companies both acknowledged that this issue could become more serious in the future as healthcare costs are expected to increase due to the ageing population, which will further add to the problem.
Hunt noted that it is essential for pharmaceutical companies to continue investing in research and development to ensure that new treatments and drugs continue to become available and remain affordable. He also highlighted the necessity for the pharmaceutical industry to be transparent about the cost of the drugs they produce and ensure that healthcare providers have access to the best levels of pricing.
Overall, the Health Secretary recognised that no single answer currently exists to the complex issue, but both parties have agreed to continue with negotiations and in the meantime, those attending the meeting have pledged to make sure that excellence in customer service and forward-thinking approaches are maintained while cost-efficiencies are also maintained.
