Topline

Just 29% of Americans want President Joe Biden to run for re-election while 39% want former President Donald Trump to run in 2024, according to a poll released Friday by Harvard University’s Center for American Political Studies and Harris Insight and Analytics.

Key Facts

Among those who said they didn’t want the 79-year-old Biden to run again, the most common stated reasons were that he’s a bad president (45%), too old (30%) and that it’s time for a change (26%).

Meanwhile, the most popular rationales for not supporting Trump’s campaign were because he’s erratic (36%), will divide the country (33%) and his responsibility for the January 6 insurrection (30%).

The poll was conducted among 1,308 registered voters June 28-29.

The survey found an increasing share of people believe the country is on the wrong track: 70% of respondents, up from 62% from last month’s poll and 39% in June 2021.

The poll found just 32% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the economy overall, a low since he took office, while 28% approve of his handling of inflation, also a low.

Surprising Fact

Trump leads Biden 44%-39% in a hypothetical 2024 rematch, according to a poll released Friday by Emerson College.

Key Background

Trump hasn’t declared that he’s running for president again, but has teased doing so on numerous occasions, including asking a crowd at a conservative conference in June whether anybody would like him to run to loud applause. The White House insists Biden will seek re-election, though many within the Democratic Party say they don’t want Biden to run.

Tangent

The Harvard-Harris poll found 88% of Americans believe the U.S. is currently in a recession or will be in one over the next 12 months. Some 64% of respondents said their financial situations are getting worse, the highest record level since the monthly survey began in March 2018. Inflation is at its highest level in 41 years, and consumer prices were 8.6% higher in May compared to 12 months prior, according to the Labor Department.
