Despite the unrest and protests, which have occurred throughout Iran recently, local artists have remained resilient, continuing their work and inspiring admirers.

From photographs to paintings and sculptures, Iranian citizens have proven to possess artistic talents that are not easy to ignore. Iranian art has long been defined by its distinct culture, history, and political atmosphere.

Although there have been periods of turmoil and political upheaval, the country’s creative folk have continued to persevere and produce powerful work encompassing not just their experience but also a shared journey with compatriots of all backgrounds and opinions.

In response to the protests, Tehran’s mayor, Mohammad Ali Najafi, released a statement saying “Those who have turned the city into war can not define its art”. His words speak volumes about the will of the artists, who were determined to express themselves amidst turbulence and dangerous conditions.

Their united determination is clear in their expression through the visual arts. Popular themes of Iranian art, such as oppression, censorship, and revolution are still vividly portrayed, highlighting the people’s unwillingness to save their voices despite the government clampdown.

These brave creatives have become a source of solace and hope for Iranians in the wake of tumultuous times. Art plays an important role in Iran’s culture and it is not just used to capture the zeitgeist. Studies have even shown that it can be used as a means of therapy and healing. Not only has art been a source of relief during a tough time, it can also be seen as a way of conveying Iranian aspirations to the world.

In a time of darkness and confusion, Iranian artists persist in the shadow of protests, using their craft to tell stories and provide hope for their nation.
