The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently announced that it has awarded over $1 billion in funding to US airports for the planning and development of intermodal terminal projects across the United States. The funding, which is provided through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), is part of the Improving Inflight and Intermodal Accessibility (IIJA) program.
The IIJA program was created in 2018 as part of the FAA’s broader effort to facilitate greater access to air travel for all people, regardless of their physical disabilities, age, or language preferences. The grants are targeted towards projects that create a single, streamlined system for travelers to get from point A to point B, including airside facilities to board and deplane aircraft, access to ground transportation, and more.
In total, the IIJA program will provide over $1 billion of grants for projects at airports in every state. This includes funding to improve existing terminal facilities and make them more accessible. The grants will also be used to create new terminals through the redevelopment of existing spaces or the construction of entirely new facilities.
The FAA expects that the projects funded by the IIJA program will improve passenger experience through enhanced capacity and safety, transit time, and accessibility. The projects are also anticipated to create new jobs and stimulate economic development, helping to drive local economies forward.
The announcement of the latest round of IIJA funding marks a significant milestone in the FAA’s commitment to the accessibility of air travel. By delivering this round of grants, the FAA is continuing to fulfill its mission of promoting the safe, accessible, and efficient use of our nation’s air transportation system.
