“Educated: A Memoir” by Tara Westover was named Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, -1.49% book editors, topping the Best Books of 2018 list. In the book, which President Obama also praised, Westover recounts her upbringing in a survivalist family in Idaho and eventual Ph.D. education at Cambridge University. Other books on the list include “Washington Black,” a novel about a young slave by Esi Edugyan; “Elevation” by Stephen King, about a Maryland man who loses weight each day; and “There There” by Tommy Orange about Native Americans in Oakland, Calif. Half of the top picks were from debut authors. Amazon stock has gained 47.2% for the year to date while the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.69% is up 4% for the period.
