A sharp decline by Chinese stocks, tumbled to four-year lows, also may have contributed to the soft tone, analysts said. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.55% was off 0.3% at 2,801, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.57% declined 96 points, or 0.4%, to 25,611. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.60% was off 0.4% to 7,612.
